Mombasa’s road network was never built for the city it has become. Commuters lose hours a day to congestion that a short stretch of water could bypass entirely. EDIC is working with maritime and port authorities to pilot a water transport route connecting key points along the coast cutting commute times, easing pressure on road infrastructure, and opening a faster, more reliable way to move around the city.

The Model
- Over 90% of surveyed residents support introducing public water transport
- PPP-ready: county owns the jetties, a private operator runs vessels and farebox
- Modelled on NY Waterway, Rotterdam Waterbus and Manly Fast Ferry
Roadmap
- Screening, concept and pre-feasibility complete as of Q1 2026
- Detailed design, regulatory approvals and investor financing active through 2027
- Phase 2 network scale-up (2028+) estimated at $30–50M
