THE OPPORTUNITY: GROWING KENYA’S VALUE-ADDED TEA EXPORTS
Kenya exports about US$1.37 billion of tea annually, but only about 6% (US$82.2 million) is value-added. Expanding local blending, packaging and branded exports can retain more value, foreign exchange and jobs in Kenya.
EDIC’s market work shows the immediate constraint is not machinery alone. SMEs also need buyer validation, packaging, reliable processors, clean transaction documents and working capital across 45-180 day export cycles.
THE STRATEGY: TWO PHASES, ONE PLATFORM
EDIC is building a phased Tea Value-Addition and Export Platform that proves demand with existing capacity before committing capital to new infrastructure.
Phase 1 – Distributed network: Connect SMEs to approved processors and packers, warehousing, logistics, quality controls and transaction support.
Transaction finance: Prepare buyer-linked transaction packs and match exporters to bank and non-bank working capital, including a proposed initial KES 50 million Credit Bank facility.
Phase 2 – Regional hub: Develop a dedicated Mombasa blending, packaging and services facility once anchor users, utilization, site and investment economics are validated.
CURRENT MOMENTUM & DELIVERY MODEL
The platform has moved from concept to live market-building with SME exporters, processors, financiers and the East Africa Tea Trade Association.
Market pipeline: Approximately 15 SME/exporter consultations; processor rails being developed with Bryson, Mizaj, PackMac and others.
Finance routes: A proposed KES 50 million bank facility plus transaction-specific non-bank finance; deals assessed on buyer, margin, tenor, controls and repayment.
Operating model: EDIC coordinates transaction readiness, finance, processor access and investor preparation; private partners deliver operating services.
The platform has moved from concept to live market-building with SME exporters, processors, financiers and the East Africa Tea Trade Association.
EDIC seeks partners to deploy trade finance, strengthen processor/logistics/quality rails, and co-fund anchor-demand validation and pre-feasibility for the larger Mombasa hub.
