THE OPPORTUNITY: ADDRESSING FRAGMENTATION IN NON-TEA EXPORTS
Mombasa Port handles over 90% of Kenya’s maritime trade, serving a vast hinterland. While the tea sector enjoys a mature, integrated ecosystem, other high-potential export value chains—specifically Coffee, Horticulture (Avocado, Mangoes), Pulses, and Minerals—suffer from severe logistical fragmentation. Currently, exporters face disjointed clearance processes involving multiple agencies (KRA, KEPHIS, KPA) located in different areas, leading to high dwell times and administrative costs. Furthermore, there is a critical shortage of integrated, shared cold-chain and handling infrastructure within the port precinct. This results in significant post-harvest losses, limits value addition, and restricts the ability of SMEs to consolidate volumes for efficient export.
The project proposes the development of the Mombasa Multi-Commodity Centre (MMCC), modeled after successful global hubs like the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC).
The MMCC will be a purpose-built facility offering a “One-Stop-Shop” for trade facilitation, combining physical infrastructure with regulatory co-location.
